Finally, the protracted transfer of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona from Liverpool is over and done with. Since Neymar Jr. left last summer in a surprise move to the Parc des Princes, Coutinho’s name has been littered all over the web about being the replacement for his compatriot. The player wanted to leave as he saw it as a lifetime opportunity and a childhood dream.
Liverpool tried their best to retain him, offering good incentives but the player’s mind could not be changed. Coutinho could not leave during the summer and despite injuries he gave his usual in the first half of the season. When Barca came again during the winter window, he could no longer wait till the summer like Anfield wanted and his new employer paid huge fees.
Many expected Liverpool to fight off the sale until the end of the season when it would be easier to reinforce. However, some others felt Coutinho was not giving his best as his mind was turned away from the Merseyside. The truth is the South American was not complacent as Fernando Torres who badly wanted to leave for Chelsea.
For Coutinho, Barcelona were everything! Torres wanted a new challenge and he moved to Stamford Bridge, breaking the hearts of the fans. He already downed tools before the move was announced. The position Liverpool were is far from the current one. Liverpool badly need replacement to ensure they make the next Champions League, go far in the current Champions League and fight for the FA Cup.
Jurgen Klopp has a lot to prove. The German has been very good at his job but he needs to take the club to the next level and it means winning titles. Getting Thomas Lemar, even though it would be expensive, or any other top quality player would immediately strengthen the squad again so they can compete.
