Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has said that the trust that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich showed in him was enough to convince him to stay at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard has been extremely frustrated with life on the bench at his new club.

He has delivered a very poor 12 goals in 67 matches for Chelsea in the 18 months he has been in London. As a result, the three managers who have been in charge at the club since January 2011 have been using Didier Drogba as the main striker for the big matches. Roberto di Matteo has been no different and he did not have Fernando Torres in the starting line-up for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

After the 4-3 win on penalties, which give Chelsea their first ever Champions League triumph, Fernando Torres said that he would be discussing his position at the club now. After his interview, the club soon announced that striker Didier Drogba will be leaving the club once his contract comes to an end at the end of this month. The eight-year stay for the Ivorian has limited opportunities for a number of strikers like Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres. However, his departure is expected to be the impetus for Torres to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

“I had a conversation with the owner of Chelsea and he trusts me. His confidence is total and that is what I needed to keep fighting and continue to be essential for the team,” said Fernando Torres after committing his future to Chelsea. The 28-year-old was signed by the club in the January transfer window of 2011 for a British transfer record fee of £ 50 million. Chelsea are expected to sign a number of high profile players in order to launch a successful bid to defend the Champions League title next season.
