It has been revealed that Brazilian defender David Luiz had to bless Fernando Torres when the Spaniard continued to misfire in front of goal at Chelsea on the back of his transfer from Premier League rivals Liverpool. Chelsea paid a club-record fee of £50m to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool in a controversial transfer at the start of 2011.
Fernando Torres was a shadow of himself at the start of his Chelsea career as he failed to replicate the form showed by him while he was at Anfield. After several months at Stamford Bridge without him finding his form, the religious David Luiz resorted to pre-match rituals as he blessed Torres before a Champions League clash with Genk from the Belgian top flight at Stamford Bridge.
The pre-match ritual from the superstitious David Luiz worked wonders as Fernando Torres scored a brace on the way to the Blues’ 5-0 home victory over Genk. The first of his two goals was a tidy finish off the assist from club legend Frank Lampard before he added his second goal of the match via a header from a Raul Meireles’ cross.
Fernando Torres showed glimpses of his old form from his time at Liverpool during the game against Genk. He would later make the biggest contribution of his Chelsea career in the same season after the Spaniard came off the bench to score the goal that clinched a final spot for the Blues in the 2012 Champions League final. Torres scored a breakaway second goal that broke Barcelona hearts as Chelsea secured a 2-2 draw away from home in their semi-final second leg clash to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory. Fernando Torres and Chelsea won the Champions League title after the penalty win over Bayern Munich after the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes.
