Chelsea manager José Mourinho has rejected speculation that Fernando Torres will be sold in the summer. The Spaniard has managed just five league goals through this season. It has been the major negative aspect for the club in the title race. They ultimately lost the title to Manchester city by a margin of just four points. Mourinho reckons that the club could have easily won the title had his strikers scored more goals. The club are widely expected to bring in Diego Costa for more than £ 30 million in the summer.
It has been speculated that Torres may be sent back to Atletico Madrid as part of this deal since Chelsea need to comply with FFP regulations. Mourinho, though, has stated that this is likely not to be the case because he sees Torres staying at the club next season as well. However, Chelsea are likely to not extend the contract of Samuel Eto’o, who has been their best striker in the second half of the season. The former Barcelona and Inter Milan star joined the club on a one-year deal last summer.
Torres finished the season on a high after scoring in the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid and also in the final game against Cardiff.
“Yes, he’s in my plans. He’s a good player. I keep saying the same – Fernando is not the kind of player that with half a chance, he scores a goal. He’s not the kind of guy that’s going to score goal after goal. But the way he works, the way he moves, the work he contributes for the team… he is a player that I like, a player that the club respects and we are happy to have him next season, no problem,” Mourinho said. Demba Ba is also likely to leave in the summer.
